Narrative Inquiry into Parenting and Growth Experiences of Mothers with Children with Asperger`s Disorder
Park Seo-Jung

Joo Yong-Kook
Abstract
This study investigates the school and community life of children with Asperger¡¯s disorder from a parental perspective, and further describes the profound personal growth experienced by the parents involved in the study. Six mothers whose children have Asperger¡¯s disorder were recruited and a narrative inquiry was applied as the primary research method. In school life, children with Asperger¡¯s disorder are often misunderstood and treated unfairly because of inappropriate social, interpersonal and problem solving skills. As a result, they often play alone which can lead to depression. In the community setting, mother¡¯s reported that it can be very difficult to predict and therefore teach appropriate community skills due to the uniqueness of their child¡¯s cognitive and behavioral processing; this often leads to feelings of frustration. However, most parents also reported unique moments of personal growth and transcendental experiences inspired by the purity of their children.
